Being caught in an emergency situation can be very difficult, especially when the proper supplies have not been gathered in advance. Regardless of whether it is a natural disaster, civil unrest or perhaps even a world-changing moment, there are basic supplies that are needed in order to make it through until things get back to normal. In some cases, it may be short-term supplies that are necessary but in other cases, it may be necessary to gather emergency essentials that could last for weeks or perhaps even months.
The following could be considered part of a basic disaster supply kit. In accordance with many of the recommendations of gathering three days worth of food, water, and other necessities, the supplies can make the difference between surviving or struggling through the entire situation.
Food – One of the more important things to have in the event of an emergency is a supply of food and in particular, nonperishable food. Many people put together a survival pantry that includes freeze-dried food, canned food and dry food essentials, such as rice and beans. 3 days worth of emergency food supplies should always be on hand.
Water – This is also an essential for an emergency situation. In order to survive a short-term emergency, 1 gallon of water for every person in the household daily should be stockpiled. This will cover drinking as well as sanitation.
Communication – When the grid goes down, it is important to have the proper type of communication. The should include a hand-cranked radio as well as a weather radio that has an emergency alert in case of problems. Have plenty of batteries on hand to keep the radio up and running.
Tools – A variety of tools should be available to help with issues that could occur in the event of an emergency. Keeping a supply of tools on hand is always a good idea but it is also wise to have a multipurpose tool that could easily be packed in case you need to bug out.
Maps – Digital maps are something that many people use on a daily basis but in the event of an emergency, access to those maps or to the electronic device may not be available. During certain types of emergencies, it may not be possible to easily identify areas that were at one time familiar. Having local maps on hand can make a difference.
First-Aid Supplies – A basic first aid kit can go a long way in helping with various problems, from a headache to a serious wound. Enough prescription medication should also be kept on hand in the event that the pharmacies are not open to supply more.
Personal Hygiene – One other option that could be included in with the emergency essentials are personal hygiene items. This could include anything from a toothbrush to feminine hygiene products. These items can be kept in the survival food pantry area for easy access in the event of an emergency.
